ES&S
has been awarded a major tender to supply a new X-band
satellite ground station to the Hong Kong Observatory.
The new system will receive high resolution meteorological, oceanographic
and environmental data from the Terra and Aqua MODIS satellites. These
data are used for applications such as fire and smoke monitoring, pollution
monitoring, fishing, aquaculture, agriculture and will lead to more
accurate forecasts of severe weather such as tropical cyclones or typhoons.
It is scheduled to be commissioned in June 2004.
Mr Bob Wright, Chief Executive Officer of ES&S, said "we are
very pleased to have won the tender against very strong competition
from the US and we look forward to working with HKO again. This is the
second satellite system our company has supplied to HKO and it will
represent a significant upgrade in their remote sensing capabilities
and improved forecasting of severe weather".
The new system was designed and built in Australia with the assistance
of a R&D Start Grant from the Australian Government through AusIndustry
and in collaboration with the Commonwealth Bureau of Meteorology. |
