A
new network of tide gauges is now operating around Port Phillip
Bay, monitoring the tide and weather at various strategic locations
to aid shipping into Melbourne. The system was designed by ES&S
for the Port of Melbourne Corporation.
As well as general tide measurement, the system is used to provide under
keel clearance information to enable efficient and safe scheduling of
container ships as they enter and leave the bay.
Each tide station is based on the ES&S PTG500e, a dedicated tide
monitoring system.
The PTG500e tide stations also continuously measure a range of meteorological
data, including temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed and wind
direction. All tide and weather data is sent in real time to a central
monitoring computer at the PoMC Shipping Management Centre.
Note - The satellite image of Port Phillip
Bay was received in Melbourne by an ES&S SATRAX700 groundstation.
