Advance Flood Warning Systems

Advance Flood Warning Systems are designed to target two primary goals. The first is to warn motorists they are approaching hazardous road flooding conditions, giving them the opportunity to stay out of harm’s way. This is normally accomplished by activating warning beacons or Dynamic Message Signs and in some cases by activating automatic crossing gates. These systems also notify transportation and emergency management personnel of the flooded roadway condition so action can be taken. The key is to focus on the benefits a well-designed system can bring to the region in terms of public safety, improved forecasting and response to flooding events.

Weather can threaten transportation nationwide and can affect roadway safety, mobility and productivity. Obtaining current and future weather condition information that is accurate is essential. Roadside Weather Stations can assist traffic engineers predict weather changes, identify threats to road surface conditions and can even activate automatic warning systems.

ES&S can provide a comprehensive range of products to aid traffic engineers including:

  • Real-time data collection (environmental monitoring, road surface status, flooded roadways)
  • Full range of sensor technologies (Bubbler Sensor, Radar/Microwave Sensor, Laser Sensor, Ultrasonic Sensor, Float Switch)
  • Portable and tower-mounted installations
  • Communication options (wireless, cellular, satellite, radio telemetry and fibre optic)
  • Centralized data collection and distribution with MDSS and GIS interface

ALERT (Automated Local Evaluation in Real Time) is a technology used to provide and analyse real-time data where rainfall and river levels may present a serious danger to life and property. There are numerous reasons for flooding, and the monitoring of this occurrence is integral in minimising property damage and loss of life.

A typical flood warning system includes a number of items, including automated sensors which are placed in or beside rivers and reservoirs throughout a designated area. Data is then collected and sent immediately to a base station or personal computer. In this way, appropriate forecasts are sent to authorities or communities of those potentially affected by the developing flood, as soon as possible.

ES&S are the Australian distributors of the above products, manufactured by High-Sierra Electronics. If you would like more information on these click here or contact meteorology@esands.com.
