China launched a new weather forecasting satellite, the Fengyun-3
(FY-3), Tuesday morning 27 May. The satellite was launched on a
Long March-4C carrier rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch
Center in northern Shanxi Province at 11:02 a.m. (Beijing Time).
The satellite will send back images with the highest spatial resolution
of 250 metres and temperature sensitivity of 0.05 degree C. These
are close to the most advanced level of any weather satellites
in the world.
The ES&S multi-role SATRAX700 groundstation is designed to receive
data from the new FY3 satellite, as well as existing 250m resolution
satellites (Terra and Aqua). The dual band SATRAX700 can also receive
data from the 1km resolution NOAA and MetOp satellites. This represents
a major step forward in high resolution data for weather forecasting. |
