St John's Cathedral in Brisbane, one of Australia's most important examples of Gothic architecture, has recently been updated with a massive copper spire. In order to monitor any affects of the additional weight on the sandstone walls, the Geosystems division of ES&S has added gauges to the pillars to detect any movement or strain. Considerable attention was paid to the location and placement of the sensors to ensure that the instrumentation does not affect the aesthetics of the 100 year old building.
By using modern technology to carefully monitor the slightest movement in the walls, ES&S is helping to maintain this beautiful Gothic cathedral.

Right: Strategically placed strain gauges measure any movement in the walls
