New Zealand's SATRAX700 antenna upgraded for dual band operation

14 Nov 2008

The ES&S SATRAX700 antenna site located in the centre of New Zealand's south island has been upgraded to receive both L-band and X-band satellites.

The system was installed at Lauder, Otago, in August 2007 for the New Zealand National Institute for Water and Atmosphere (NIWA). For the past fifteen months it has been receiving X-band remote sensing data from NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites.

The recently completed upgrade allows the antenna to also receive data from the L-band NOAA polar orbiting satellites, greatly increasing the amount of data which can be received at the site.

As it is received, data from the Lauder satellite groundstation is sent in near real time to NIWA's satellite processing centre in Wellington via a high speed fibre optic link.
